Background & Journey
Harrison first connected with the marine industry through a family friend at Gippsland Ports who encouraged him to try work experience. That introduction quickly turned into a passion for working on boats and the water, leading him to begin an apprenticeship in Marine Craft Construction. Now in his third year, Harrison has embraced the challenges of transitioning from school to full-time trade work and has become an integral member of the Gippsland Ports team.
Skills & Achievements
Harrison has already developed a strong technical foundation and is known for his high-quality workmanship. Highlights include:
- Contributing to the restoration of a 105-year-old timber vessel, working alongside experienced tradespeople.
- Completing four major osmosis repairs.
- Developing expertise in fibreglass hull preparation and gelcoat finishing, including a full black-hull gelcoat respray on a Whittley 2800.
- Showing particular interest in fibreglass repair and construction techniques, an area where he continues to grow.
His trainer, Scott Compson from AIE, supports his development through a mix of online study and workplace visits, complementing his practical training.

When asked about being nominated, Harrison said he was “shocked at first, but very excited.” He enjoys the variety of work and being close to the water every day. His advice to other young people is simple: “Give it a go. If you like boats and the water, you might just find a career you love.”
