Apprentice Profile – Ollie Shaw

Apprenticeship: Certificate III in Marine Mechanical Technology (Kangan)
Employer: Stratford Marine

Background & Journey

Ollie’s pathway into the marine industry was inspired by his lifelong passion for fishing and boating. After initially working in concreting, he knew his future was with boats and engines. His enthusiasm for the water and practical skills made him a natural fit for Stratford Marine, where he began his apprenticeship in Marine Mechanical Technology.

Skills & Achievements

Despite only being in his first year, Ollie has already mastered a wide range of marine trade skills. He:

  • Carries out complete fit-outs of new boat packages, from installing Honda outboards to fitting advanced electronics.
  • Applies his mechanical aptitude across different systems, noting that once you understand marine mechanics, the knowledge transfers across other engines, even cars.
  • Has taken on rebuilding a Haines Hunter 17R—his own boat project—as a personal challenge.
  • Is about to begin Honda advanced mechanical training, showing remarkable progression for a first-year apprentice.
Work Ethic & Attitude

Ollie is recognised for his reliability and commitment—he has never missed a day of work and is always early to start. If he finishes a task, he doesn’t wait around; instead, he proactively cleans the workshop or sets up the next job. His director describes him as “driven to be the best” and notes the pride he takes in every job he does.

Growth & Development

Every day Ollie continues to grow in confidence and skill. He takes every opportunity for overtime, seeks out learning material online or in magazines, and applies new knowledge directly to his work. While he admits online training can be challenging, preferring classroom learning, he overcomes this by relying on his hands-on skills and determination to succeed.

Contribution to Team

Ollie’s passion and attitude lift the whole Stratford Marine team. He sets an example for others with his work ethic, initiative, and enthusiasm, helping to build a culture of pride in workmanship and customer service.

Future Potential

With strong technical skills, a deep love of the water, and family roots in the local fishing community, Ollie has a bright future in the marine sector. His ambition is to one day own his own marine business, and with his dedication and drive, he is on track to achieve it.

Personal Reflection

Being nominated for Apprentice of the Year is an exciting milestone for Ollie. What he enjoys most about his work is the variety of projects, the satisfaction of going the extra mile for customers, and being surrounded by boats every day. His advice to young people considering the trade is simple: “Come in and give it a crack—it’s different, and you might find something you love.”
