Apprentice Profile – Jayden Arnett
Apprenticeship: Certificate III in Marine Craft Construction
Employer: Inferno Marine
Background & Journey
For Jayden Arnett, the pathway into boat building came unexpectedly — and it turned out to be the perfect fit. Originally working in the air conditioning trade, Jayden was looking for a new challenge when he met Tim Ewert from Inferno Marine. After completing a one-week trial, he quickly discovered a passion for hands-on work and the creativity of boat construction. That experience led to a full-time marine craft construction apprenticeship, and Jayden hasn’t looked back since.
Skills & Achievements
- Now in his third year of training, Jayden has developed a strong skill set across all areas of the trade, including:
- Fibreglassing and mould work, from mixing paint to flow coating and anti-fouling
- Fit-outs and finishes, including windscreens, interiors, and final detailing
- A growing interest and skill in precision measuring and assembly
- Contributing to the construction of high-performance speed skiing boats — including those on display at the Melbourne Boat Show
Jayden’s attention to detail and pride in his workmanship show through in every task he undertakes. He particularly enjoys the satisfaction of seeing a boat come together — “putting the final pieces into place and standing back to see what you’ve built.”
Work Ethic & Attitude
Jayden’s work ethic is outstanding. Always the first to step in and help, he never stands idle — if he’s waiting for direction, he’ll pick up a broom, lend a hand to his teammates, or start preparing for the next job. His positive attitude, humility, and reliability have made him a valued part of the Inferno Marine team.
Growth & Development
Over the past 12 months, Jayden has found his rhythm in the workshop, growing in both confidence and capability. He’s shown strong commitment to learning and improving, engaging well during his block training with GOTAFE and applying what he learns directly on the job. His steady development and willingness to take feedback on board are key factors in his success so far.
Contribution to the Workplace
Jayden plays a vital role in maintaining the team culture at Inferno Marine. Always upbeat and willing to help others, he contributes to the positive environment that keeps production running smoothly. He’s becoming increasingly independent with his work and is trusted to take ownership of key stages in the boat-building process.
Future Potential
Tim Ewert describes Jayden as “one of the best apprentices I’ve had” — high praise from a business that’s setting the standard for custom ski and wake boat manufacturing in Victoria. Jayden hopes to continue his career at Inferno Marine, refining his skills and eventually mentoring future apprentices who follow in his footsteps. With his drive, attention to detail, and team spirit, Jayden is well on track for a bright future in the marine industry.
In His Own Words
“I love fitting out boats — inside and out — and seeing the final pieces come together. There’s a lot of pride in being able to say, ‘I helped build that.’ The best advice I can give anyone is to give it a go — it’s a career where you get to create something real, something you can be proud of.”
