Certificate III in Marine Mechanical Technology
Work on some of the most powerful engines on the market — and build a career in one of Victoria's most in-demand trades.
Already considering automotive or vehicle mechanics?
Marine mechanics use exactly the same diagnostic and repair skills as car mechanics — but instead of the same engines day in, day out, you're working on outboard motors, sterndrives, jet drives, and diesel inboards. High-performance, technically interesting, and far more varied. Same trade. Better machines.
What is a Marine Mechanic?
A marine mechanic diagnoses, services, and repairs the engines and mechanical systems that power boats. You'll work on outboard motors, sterndrives, diesel inboards, and jet drives — and the electrical systems that keep them running. Work happens in a workshop, a boatyard, and sometimes on the water itself.
What will you actually do?
- Service and repair outboard engines from brands like Suzuki, Mercury, Yamaha, and Honda
- Diagnose faults using electronic diagnostic tools and technical manuals
- Replace and rebuild mechanical components — impellers, gear cases, fuel systems
- Perform safety checks and pre-season tune-ups for customers
- Work alongside experienced technicians in a real workshop environment
- Interact with boat owners and help them understand their vessel
Why choose this trade?
- Work on high-performance marine engines — outboards, sterndrives, jet drives, and diesel inboards
- Every day is different — seasonal work keeps things varied and interesting
- Strong demand means you choose your employer, not the other way around
- Clear pathways into workshop management, brand dealerships, or your own business
- Victoria's boating industry supports approximately a quarter of a million vessels — this trade is not going away
