Over three consecutive weeks, the Boating Careers Industry Immersion program has taken students on a hands-on exploration of the boating industry across three key locations—Dandenong, Williamstown, and Geelong. We offered students from multiple schools the opportunity to engage with 12 different employers in the industry, giving them a taste of the wide range of careers that exist within our sector.
The quality of students attending these immersion days was exceptional. Each group showed genuine interest in the industry, actively participating in the tours, asking thoughtful questions, and demonstrating a strong desire to learn more about the various career pathways available in boating. This enthusiasm was a positive sign for the future of the industry and highlights the potential for these students to become the next generation of skilled professionals.
Our collaboration with the Victorian Local Learning and Employment Networks (Vic LLENs) and Headstart providers played a crucial role in making these immersions a success. These partners will manage the structured work placement opportunities with employers, with the goal of progressing students into school-based apprenticeships. This pathway offers a practical and effective way for students to transition into a long-term career in the boating industry while continuing their education.
The immersion days were no small feat, spanning across three locations and involving a total of 12 industry employers and 37 students. It was truly a team effort, and we want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who was involved. From our generous industry partners who welcomed us into their workplaces to the educators and coordinators who supported this initiative, your contributions have been invaluable. The boating industry can be proud for stepping up to the challenge and giving these students real opportunities to enter our industry.

The Victorian boating Industry supporting the next generation
Looking ahead, we plan to run these immersions again next year, with an aim to increase participation and enhance the experience with new elements, including contributions from training providers. In addition, we are exploring the possibility of expanding the program to other locations around Victoria and are considering a female-focused immersion in collaboration with the Victorian Fishing Authority and Women in Recreational Fishing and Boating (WIRFAB).
We look forward to continuing this initiative, providing even more students with real opportunities to explore careers in our sector.
