Across Australia, marine businesses are finding it increasingly difficult to recruit experienced marine mechanics and technicians. With the growing demand for servicing and maintaining boats, engines, and marine systems, many employers are now exploring new ways to fill critical skill gaps including through Employer Sponsorship under the Subclass 482 Visa program.
What Is Employer Sponsorship
Employer sponsorship allows Australian businesses to hire skilled workers from overseas to fill specific roles when suitably qualified local workers cannot be found. It’s a practical solution for employers in industries facing ongoing skills shortages — such as the boating and marine sector.
Under the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa – Subclass 482, marine businesses can sponsor international candidates for roles including:
- Marine Mechanic / Marine Technician
- Outboard Engine Technician
- Inboard Engine Specialist
- Marine Electrical Technician
- Marine Trim or Fabrication Specialist
These positions are recognised under the Australian Skilled Occupation List, allowing eligible employers to bring in skilled staff to meet operational demands and support business growth.
How the Process Works
Become an Approved Sponsor
The business applies to become a Standard Business Sponsor (SBS), which allows it to employ skilled overseas workers for up to five years.
Nominate a Skilled Worker
Once approved, the employer nominates a specific role and worker. The position must meet market salary rates and reflect the genuine needs of the business.
Visa Application and Approval
The nominated worker applies for the 482 visa, which allows them to live and work in Australia for the approved employer.
Typical Government Fees
Standard Business Sponsorship (SBS) Application $420
Nomination Application $330
Visa Application (Primary Applicant) $3,115
Skilling Australians Fund (SAF) Levy $1,200 per year (businesses under $10M turnover) / $1,800 per year (businesses over $10M turnover)
Additional costs may include medical checks, police clearances, and migration agent or processing fees.
Employer Responsibilities
Employers must:
- Pay at least the market salary rate for the role (Approx $76k)
- Ensure the employee works in the nominated occupation.
- Meet all sponsorship obligations, including record-keeping and reporting.
The shortage of qualified marine technicians continues to impact dealerships, workshops, and service centres across Australia. Employer sponsorship provides an immediate and compliant pathway to access skilled labour while also giving international workers a structured way to build their careers in Australia’s growing marine sector.
If your business is struggling to find qualified marine technicians, Boating Careers can help you understand the sponsorship process and connect with skilled candidates ready to work in Australia.
