Boating Careers is a comprehensive business model designed to address the skills shortage in the marine industry in Victoria. The primary goal is to bridge the gap between industry demand and available skilled workers by providing training, education, and employment opportunities in the boating sector. By partnering with industry stakeholders, educational institutions, and government agencies, Boating Careers aims to create a sustainable pipeline of skilled professionals for the marine industry in Victoria.
Key Functions:
Student Development Programs VET VCAL VCE:
Collaborating with apprenticeship network providers like Headstart to establish training pathways and development programs for high school students is a great approach to nurturing talent in the marine industry. Here's how Boating Careers can further develop these student development programs:
Working closely with apprenticeship network providers to develop clear processes for students to enter marine specific VET (Vocational Education and Training), VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning), and VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education) programs. Promotion of these programs will immediately start to filter new entrants into the main skills shortage areas of marine mechanics, boat building, and marine trimming.
Students are not aware of nor consider Boating and Marine apprenticeships as an option when deciding career options because there is no one driving its promotion. Boating careers will create awareness of boating and marine apprenticeships by employing the following strategies:
· School Presentations
· Career Fairs and Expos
· Building strong relationships with career councillors
· Facilitating industry visits and workshops (Immersions)
· Being an online presence and source of information
· Having stronger links and collaboration with VET Training providers
· Implementing scholarships and employer incentives
By implementing these strategies, Boating Careers can enhance its student development programs, attract more students to the marine industry, and provide them with the necessary training and apprenticeship opportunities to kickstart their careers. This approach would contribute to addressing the skills shortage in the industry and create a sustainable pipeline of skilled professionals.
Partnerships with Educational Institutions:
Due to lack of demand educational institutions in Victoria do not put priority on Marine and Boating qualifications and apprenticeships. Marine qualifications are currently often grouped under categories like automotive or engineering giving it the effect of being “under wraps”. Establishing marine as a separate category within the educational system can enhance its visibility and raise awareness. This increased visibility can attract more individuals who have a specific interest in the marine industry and encourage them to pursue marine qualifications.
Boating careers will establish formal partnerships with Tafe’s and registered training organisations to help boost student numbers into key qualifications that are vital to the industry’s future. Marine qualifications are currently low priority in terms of an allocation of resources for educational institution as the demand is not there. Increasing enrolments into these qualifications would justify further investment to improve and expand training recourses making them more accessible to meet industry needs. This will also attract more educational institutions to add these qualifications to scope.
**Victoria has very few institutions delivering Marine qualifications making the industry not only difficult to enter, but logistically impossible for most Victorians to access. **
Immersion Programs:
To offer students a comprehensive understanding of various career pathways within the boating and marine industry, we will develop immersive experiential programs. These programs will provide students with the opportunity to engage directly with industry professionals and gain hands-on experience in different roles and sectors such as marine mechanics, technicians, trimmers, and marinas.
To ensure accessibility and participation from schools across Victoria, we will design a practical model that simplifies logistics. This will involve organizing transportation via buses to pick up students from different schools and take them to various marine employers. The day will be divided into visits to different sectors, allowing students to spend time in real-world environments and gain valuable insights. By structuring the program to accommodate multiple schools in a single trip, we aim to cover all Victorian schools at least once a year.
By implementing these immersive experiential programs, we aim to spark interest and awareness among students about the diverse career opportunities available in the boating and marine industry. Through hands-on experiences and interactions with industry professionals, students can make informed decisions about their career paths and consider pursuing marine qualifications and apprenticeships.
Recruitment Services:
Boating Careers recognises the importance of connecting skilled graduates or new entrants with suitable employment opportunities in the marine industry. To facilitate this, we will establish a dedicated recruitment resource that will be responsible for matching employers in the marine industry with qualified candidates who possess the necessary skills and qualifications.
The recruitment service will go beyond simply providing job placement. It will offer apprenticeship guidance and ongoing career support to ensure long-term industry growth and success for both employers and candidates. This support will include assistance with resume writing, interview coaching, and access to professional development resources.
By having a dedicated recruitment specialist focused solely on marine-specific roles, Boating Careers will provide a valuable service to both employers and job seekers. The benefits of this service include:
Boating Careers is a marketing powerhouse with access to beautiful boats and equipment available to exhibit at your next event. We are here to spread the word and promote careers within the boating and marine industry.
