The Boating Apprentices Project is an exciting initiative that gives current apprentices the opportunity to collaborate on a comprehensive boat restoration project. Working in a coordinated, staged process, a designated vessel will move between participating TAFEs to undergo shipwright work, trimming, mechanical, electronics, and more. This project also incorporates teamwork and project management elements, fostering a well-rounded, hands-on learning experience for apprentices.
The first project in this program will focus on restoring a 1987 Searay Seville, generously provided by Aussie Boat Sales. This 6m fibreglass sports cabin boat with a Mercruiser V6 engine requires a complete overhaul, from inspecting the hull and structural repairs to upgrading wiring, electronics, and retrimming.
The Boating Apprentices Project also welcomes support from BIAV industry members, who can contribute skills, support, parts and/or materials at 'mates' rates. Our vision is to see the Sea Ray fully restored, with apprentices gaining valuable experience, a sense of achievement, and a finished vessel that can be used for industry promotion or charitable fundraising.
The highly anticipated Marine Apprenticeship Project is officially underway, with Wade Ryan, General Manager at Penfolds Marine, and his apprentice, Matthew, recently conducting a detailed inspection of the vessel that will serve as the cornerstone of the project.
In his initial report, Wade highlighted key areas requiring attention, providing a comprehensive overview of the work ahead for the apprentices. The project will cover a wide range of essential marine trades, from engine bay vent replacements and gunwale repairs to removing and replacing electronics, fittings, and upholstery. Wade also noted the importance of addressing potential rot in the timber and cleaning up the dash to accommodate new gauges and electronics.
“This vessel will be a great project for all marine trade apprentices,” Wade commented, emphasizing the hands-on learning experience the boat will provide.
In addition to the boat inspection, Scott from Aussie Boat Sales has generously lent a trailer to assist in the restoration, ensuring the project can move forward without delay. Special thanks to Wade, Matthew, and Scott for their valuable time and contributions to this exciting apprenticeship initiative!
Stay tuned for progress updates on this incredible hands-on project!
